The International Builders show in Las Vegas on January 13, 2013 revealed some interesting design trends.  Over-the-top bathrooms don’t seem to be ‘in’ any longer.  Master bath designs have evolved, according to the industry experts.   In addition, family foyers are replacing the typical utility closet or laundry room and becoming a big focal point for home builders.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms have a more sensible look shifting from the crystal-chandeliered trends seen in the past decade.   Emphasis is placed on well-considered detail instead of opulence.  It’s described as understated elegance.  Nice light colors are on the walls.  Clean white and elegant furnishings are used.  Extra walls are non-existing and less unused floor space create an open look in the smaller space.  The new granite is white cararra marble.  It’s used on walls, backsplashes, and countertops.

Wallpaper is out, unless you use white or beige with light prints on it.  You don’t want to be overbearing on the colors and prints.  Furnishings are white or beige and have classic heirloom looks.  Seating is large and bold but still in the soft white or beige colors.  Clawfuit, stand-alone bathtubs help create an open look.

However, the carrara marble isn’t restricted only to the bathrooms.  It’s found its way into award winning kitchens.  Countertops and backsplashes are carrara marble instead of granite.  White is everywhere according to Karen Kassik, a home designer in Anchorage, Alaska.

Family Foyer

Casual style in homes is in.  Lifestyle and decorating for lifestyle are the new trend.  Family foyers have become a focal point in this new trend.  Homeowners want to build more than just a “laundry room.”  The family foyer includes room for backpacks, hockey sticks, space for extra storage, pocket offices, etc.  Don’t forget to include your dog when building this room.  Dog crates, grooming tools, pet toys and other pet stuff are also part of this room.  Pet tubs for bathing make it easier to keep the house clean when Fido comes in messy from outside.  Clean exits and entrances for everyone are considered and incorporated into the family foyer’s design.

New Colors for Appliances

GE rolled out washers and dryers that resemble the sleek sports-car styling in light sparkly graphic color that the company calls Metallic Carbon.  GE also has refrigerators in bronze colors.    However, white is still in.  Whirlpool revealed its white with pearly finished appliances.  It’s a color the company calls Ice.  It also has a black Ice finish that has a similar pear-like gloss.
