We recently discussed a few high-end quality built-in grills for an outdoor kitchen so we thought we would also give you an alternative to building an outdoor kitchen.  They are called grill islands.  Grill islands are available in many different shapes, sizes and colors.  There are also many materials you can select from.   Installing a grill island instead of building a full-blown outdoor kitchen will save you money and time because you only need to decide on the island style, material, grill, and refrigerator.

There are many island styles you can choose from.  There are L-shaped, U-shaped, and long or short rectangle shaped grill islands.  They also have design themes which include modern design, tropical design, or rustic design, etc.  The various materials you can choose from are stone, brick, limestone, granite, etc.

There are also a variety of built in grills on the market.  In our last blog we discussed grills that ranged in price from $4,997 to $10,000.  Most grills come with the fuel option for natural gas or propane, but there is also the hybrid grill that allows both fuel options along with charcoal and wood.  The key to selecting the grill is to make sure it has high BTUs.  Additional grill features available are rotisseries, warmers, and infrared heating.  We also found some less expensive alternatives, but they aren’t luxury grills.

When it comes to the refrigerator, you only have two options, a mini-refrigerator or a refrigerator drawer.  Grill islands are counter height so you won’t be able to fit a large refrigerator in the island.  Make sure which ever option you select includes an ice-maker so you’ll have ice outside for your drinks.

When deciding on installing a backyard grill island, these are the major decisions you’ll have to make.  The grill and the refrigerator selections are the most important choices you’ll make for the island.  You want your grill to cook your food properly so your food is enjoyable and you don’t want to run inside the house for every little thing you need when you’re outside cooking.  So your refrigerator will need to accommodate everything you use when cooking.  There are many other amenities that you can include in a grill island such as, having a roof over the island, adding a television with speaker systems, etc.  A grill island is a great alternative to building a full-blown outdoor kitchen.  If you decide you don’t want to put a cover over your island, make sure to select a material that can withstand outdoor elements.

The options are endless and you can be as creative as you like with a grill island.
